Geometry — Study of Lines
Before polygons come lines. The child who can name and draw a perpendicular line owns a geometric primitive. Lines are the atoms of form — indirect preparation for everything from angle work to architecture. A crooked 'straight line' is caught by the eye.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Geometry
- Level: Ages 6-7
Objectives
- Name the basic types of lines: straight, curved, horizontal, vertical, oblique, parallel, perpendicular, intersecting
- Draw each line type with a straight edge
- Match nomenclature cards to line types
- Prepare for the full geometry charts sequence
Materials
- Geometry line nomenclature cards (three-part)
- Straight edge ruler
- Lined paper and pencil
- Geometry album
Instructions
1. Introduce the nomenclature cards. 2. Name each line type: straight, curved, horizontal, vertical, oblique. 3. Draw each on paper using the straight edge. 4. Introduce line relationships: parallel (never meet), perpendicular (meet at 90°), intersecting (cross at any angle). 5. Draw each relationship. 6. Match three-part cards: solid line, labeled line, name card. 7. Hunt for each type in the classroom (table edge = horizontal, door frame = vertical). 8. Record in a geometry album. 9. Prepare for angle work next.
Educator tip
Provide high-quality rulers — a cheap ruler makes precision impossible. Use colored pencils to emphasize each line type.
Assessment
Note naming accuracy, drawing precision, and identification of line types in the environment.
