Small Bead Frame
The small bead frame collapses the stamp game into a compact, abstract tool. Each bead is a unit of its category, and every exchange moves a bead on one wire and across the frame.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Addition
- Level: Ages 8-9
Objectives
- Perform multi-digit addition and subtraction on the small bead frame
- Work with units, tens, hundreds, thousands
- Bridge from the stamp game to the large bead frame
- Record operations on colored paper
Materials
- Small bead frame with four horizontal wires and 10 beads each (green units, blue tens, red hundreds, green thousands)
- Lined paper with colored columns
- Colored pencils
Instructions
1. Write the first addend on paper using color coding. 2. Slide beads on the frame to represent it: units first, then tens, hundreds, thousands. 3. Add the second addend by sliding more beads. 4. If a wire exceeds 9 beads, exchange ten beads for one on the next wire. 5. Record the sum. 6. For subtraction, start with the minuend and slide beads back. 7. If one category has insufficient beads, exchange one from the next category. 8. Record the difference. 9. Verify by counting the beads on each wire.
Educator tip
Teach the exchange slowly — it's the crucial move. A child who masters the exchange owns place value.
Assessment
Note accurate representation of numbers, correct exchanges, and alignment of paper record with bead frame state.
