Measuring Length with Non-Standard Units
Non-standard measurement builds the concept of what measuring means before introducing standard units, preventing rote ruler use without understanding.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Measurement
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Understand the concept of measurement
- Compare lengths using uniform units
- Develop estimation skills
Materials
- Unit cubes
- Paper clips
- Hand spans
- Objects to measure
- Recording strip
Instructions
1. 'How long is this table?' 2. Line up unit cubes end to end. Count. 3. Record: 'The table is 24 cubes long.' 4. Measure same object with paper clips. 5. Compare: different numbers, same table! 6. 'Why did we get different numbers?' 7. Introduce need for standard units.
Educator tip
The 'aha' moment comes when children realize different units give different numbers for the same length.
Assessment
