Geometric Solids
The Geometric Solids introduce three-dimensional geometry through sensorial exploration, building shape vocabulary and spatial awareness.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Geometry
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Identify 3D shapes by name
- Explore properties: faces, edges, vertices
- Connect to real-world objects
Materials
- Geometric Solids: sphere, cube, cylinder, cone, prism, pyramid, ovoid, ellipsoid
- Blindfold
- Matching cards with real objects
Instructions
1. Present sphere. 'This is a sphere. It rolls.' 2. Present cube. 'This is a cube. It has flat faces.' 3. Explore each solid: roll, stack, feel. 4. Three-period lesson for names. 5. Blindfold: identify by touch. 6. Match to real objects: 'A ball is a sphere.'
Educator tip
Let children explore freely first. The sensorial experience precedes vocabulary.
Assessment
Child names solids, describes properties, and connects to real-world objects.
