Constructive Triangles: First Box
The Constructive Triangles reveal that all flat shapes can be composed from triangles—a foundational geometric concept.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Geometry
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Discover that triangles form other shapes
- Build spatial reasoning
- Understand geometric composition
Materials
- Constructive Triangles: First Box (triangles with black lines for matching)
- Work mat
Instructions
1. Present triangles from First Box. 2. Match black lines together. 3. Discover shapes formed: square, rectangle, parallelogram, rhombus, hexagon. 4. 'Two triangles made a square!' 5. Record which triangles make which shapes. 6. Experiment with different combinations.
Educator tip
The black lines guide composition, but later boxes remove this scaffold. Start here for self-correcting exploration.
Assessment
Child constructs multiple shapes from triangles and names the resulting shapes.
