Geometry Chart 1 — Basic Figures
Chart 1 is elementary's geometric foundation. Every figure named, every part labeled. Indirect aim: geometric vocabulary, preparation for geometric proof.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Geometry
- Level: Ages 7-9
Objectives
- Identify basic plane figures: line, angle, triangle, quadrilateral, circle
- Name parts: vertex, side, diagonal
- Classify triangles by sides and angles
- Build vocabulary for further geometry
Materials
- Geometry Chart 1
- Plane figure nomenclature cards
- Compass, straightedge, ruler
- Recording paper
Instructions
1. Present Chart 1. 2. Name each figure. 3. Label parts: vertex, side, diagonal. 4. Classify triangles by sides (equilateral/isosceles/scalene) and angles (acute/right/obtuse). 5. Classify quadrilaterals (square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezoid, kite). 6. Match cards. 7. Draw each figure with compass+straightedge. 8. File.
Educator tip
Geometry is classification first, then measurement. Vocabulary matters — the child who knows 'parallelogram' uses it.
Assessment
Observe naming accuracy, classification, and construction.
