Geometric Symmetry — Reflection, Rotation, Translation
Symmetry is geometry's aesthetic. Three types exist: reflection, rotation, translation. Indirect aim: group theory preparation, aesthetic mathematics, design applications.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Geometry
- Level: Ages 8-10
Objectives
- Identify reflection symmetry (mirror line)
- Identify rotation symmetry (order of rotation)
- Identify translational symmetry (tessellations)
- Apply to design
Materials
- Symmetry chart
- Mirrors
- Tracing paper
- Graph paper
- Art reproductions
Instructions
1. Reflection: fold paper; mirror-image halves. 2. Rotation: rotate a shape about a center; does it land on itself? Count the rotations. 3. Translation: slide a motif repeatedly — wallpaper pattern. 4. Study flags, architecture, tiles. 5. Draw figures with each type. 6. Note: Islamic art uses all three. 7. Design own symmetric pattern. 8. File.
Educator tip
Islamic tessellations at the Alhambra show all 17 wallpaper groups — elementary math at architectural scale.
Assessment
Observe identification across types and original design.
