Measurement — Weight and Mass
Mass is how much matter; weight is gravity's pull on it. On the moon your weight differs but mass doesn't. Indirect aim: scientific precision, preparation for physics, everyday measurement skill.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Operations
- Level: Ages 7-9
Objectives
- Measure in grams, kilograms, tons
- Distinguish weight (force) from mass (quantity of matter)
- Convert between units
- Weigh real objects with scale
Materials
- Kitchen and bathroom scales
- Weights (100g, 500g, 1kg)
- Conversion chart
- Various objects to weigh
Instructions
1. Weigh small objects in grams. 2. Weigh larger in kg. 3. Convert: 1 kg = 1000 g. 4. Research tons (metric = 1000 kg; US = 2000 lb). 5. Distinguish weight vs mass: same mass on Earth and Moon, different weight. 6. Weigh a child — mass. 7. Apply in cooking (recipe grams). 8. File.
Educator tip
The weight-vs-mass distinction is often skipped. Teach it here — it matters in physics.
Assessment
Observe measurement accuracy, conversion, and understanding of the distinction.
