Measurement — Length in Metric
The metric system is decimal — 10s all the way. A millimeter is 1/10 cm, a centimeter 1/100 m. Indirect aim: decimal mastery, scientific measurement, preparation for metric-global literacy.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Operations
- Level: Ages 7-9
Objectives
- Measure in mm, cm, m, km
- Convert between units
- Estimate then measure real objects
- Understand the decimal relationship (10×)
Materials
- Metric rulers, meter stick, measuring tape
- Various objects to measure
- Conversion chart
- Outdoor space to measure
Instructions
1. Measure classroom pencil in mm, cm. 2. Measure desk in cm, m. 3. Measure hallway in m. 4. Estimate km to a landmark. 5. Convert: 1 km = 1000 m = 100,000 cm = 1,000,000 mm. 6. Estimate real objects before measuring. 7. Track estimation accuracy. 8. Apply to real tasks (cutting wood, measuring fabric).
Educator tip
Metric is the world's system. Practice estimation — 'about a meter' for a door width.
Assessment
Observe measurement accuracy, conversion, and estimation growth.
