Fraction Nomenclature
Precise vocabulary—numerator (how many parts we have) and denominator (how many parts make the whole)—builds mathematical communication.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Fractions
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Learn proper fraction vocabulary
- Name numerator and denominator
- Read and write fraction notation
Materials
- Fraction circles
- Fraction vocabulary cards
- Fraction writing practice sheets
- Red and blue pencils
Instructions
1. Present 3/4 with fraction circle. 2. 'The bottom number tells how many equal parts in the whole. This is the denominator: 4.' 3. 'The top number tells how many parts we have. This is the numerator: 3.' 4. Write fraction. Color numerator red, denominator blue. 5. Practice naming parts of various fractions. 6. Read fractions aloud.
Educator tip
Etymology helps: denominator means 'namer' (names the type of part), numerator means 'counter' (counts the parts).
