Cube Chains and Square Numbers
Cube chains extend the bead chain concept to three dimensions, introducing cubed numbers through concrete manipulation and counting.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Linear Counting
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Count cube chains
- Understand cubed numbers
- Connect skip counting to multiplication
Materials
- Cube chains: chain of 8, 27, 64, 125
- Arrow labels
- Corresponding cubes
- Recording sheet
Instructions
1. Present chain of 27 (three 3-bars repeated 3 times, in 3 sets). 2. Count each bead, placing arrows. 3. Skip count by 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27. 4. Fold to match 3×3 square, then 3-cube. 5. '3 × 3 × 3 = 27. This is 3 cubed!' 6. Record: 3³ = 27.
Educator tip
Folding the chain into first a square, then a cube makes the dimensional progression concrete and memorable.
Assessment
Child counts cube chains, skip counts, and connects to cubed numbers.
