Introduction to Simple Equations
Simple equations with missing numbers introduce algebraic thinking naturally, using the balance metaphor to make equality concrete.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Problem Solving
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Solve for unknown quantities
- Understand the equals sign as balance
- Build algebraic thinking
Materials
- Balance scale
- Weights
- Equation cards with missing numbers
- Bead bars
Instructions
1. Balance scale: place 5 on one side, 3 + ? on other. 2. 'What makes it balance? 3 + 2 = 5.' 3. Write: 3 + = 5. 4. 'The box means a missing number.' 5. Solve with bead bars: 'I need 2 more to make 5.' 6. Try: + 4 = 7, 8 - = 3. 7. Use fact families to solve.
Educator tip
The balance scale makes equality physical. Children understand that both sides must have the same value.
Assessment
Child solves missing number equations using multiple strategies.
