Editing and Revising: Making Writing Better
Editing teaches children that writing is a process—first drafts are beginnings, not finished products. This growth mindset transforms writing development.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Writing
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Review own writing for clarity
- Check for punctuation and capitalization
- Improve word choice and detail
- Develop self-editing habits
Materials
- Editing checklist (capitals, periods, spelling, sense)
- Colored pencils for marking edits
- Peer editing protocol
- Writing samples for practice editing
Instructions
1. Present editing checklist with symbols. 2. Model editing a sample: 'I see a missing period. I'll add it.' 3. 'This word could be more interesting. Let's change nice to delightful.' 4. Child edits own work. 5. Peer editing: trade papers and check. 6. Revise based on feedback. 7. Publish final version.
Educator tip
Keep editing age-appropriate. Young editors check for capitals and periods. Only older children edit for spelling and word choice. Don't overwhelm.
Assessment
Child uses editing checklist to improve own writing, identifying and correcting basic errors.
