Writing About Science: Observation Records
Scientific writing connects Language to Cultural Studies, giving children a purposeful reason to observe carefully and record precisely—skills valued in both domains.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Writing
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Write scientific observations
- Use descriptive and precise language
- Record changes over time
- Connect writing to Cultural curriculum
Materials
- Science journals
- Observation recording sheets
- Magnifying glasses
- Plants, animals, or specimens to observe
- Colored pencils for illustrations
Instructions
1. Set up observation: class plant or animal. 2. 'What do you notice today?' 3. Draw what you see (scientific illustration). 4. Write observations: size, color, changes. 5. Use measurement when possible. 6. Record daily/weekly. 7. Compare entries over time: 'How has it changed?'
Educator tip
Model the difference between observation ('The leaf is 3cm long and green') and interpretation ('The plant is happy'). Scientists record what they SEE.
Assessment
Child writes accurate, detailed scientific observations with both drawings and text.
