The -igh pattern is a common English spelling for the long i sound. Learning it as a unit helps children read and spell these otherwise challenging words.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Word Study
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Read and spell words with -igh pattern
- Understand that igh represents long i
- Build pattern recognition in spelling
- Connect to phonogram knowledge
Materials
- -igh word cards (night, light, right, sight, flight, bright)
- Sorting mats
- Sentence strips with -igh words
- Phonogram reference chart
Instructions
1. Present words: night, light, right. 2. 'What's the same in all these words?' (-igh) 3. 'The i-g-h together says /ī/. The g and h are silent helpers!' 4. Read -igh word list. 5. Sort -igh words by beginning. 6. Use in sentences. 7. Compare to other long i spellings (i-e in bike, y in my).
Educator tip
Teach -igh as a chunk, not individual letters. 'When you see i-g-h together, say /ī/.' This reduces cognitive load.
Assessment
Child reads and spells -igh words and recognizes the pattern in new words.
