Dictation Exercise — Listening and Transcribing
Dictation links the ear to the hand through the mind. The child must hear, parse, spell, punctuate, and commit to paper simultaneously. Errors appear clearly when comparing to the printed version — the control is the original text.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Writing
- Level: Ages 7-8
Objectives
- Transcribe a passage read aloud at a measured pace
- Attend to spelling, punctuation, and capitalization
- Build listening-to-writing fluency
- Prepare for note-taking in research
Materials
- Short passage printed on a card (reference for adult reader)
- Lined paper and pencil
- Quiet work space
Instructions
1. Adult reads a passage once fully for context. 2. Child takes pencil and paper. 3. Adult reads the first sentence slowly, once only. 4. Child writes while listening. 5. Continue sentence by sentence. 6. At the end, adult reads the entire passage aloud again. 7. Child self-corrects: adds missed words, fixes spelling, adds punctuation. 8. Compare to the printed version. 9. Note and study the errors.
Educator tip
Start with very short passages — two sentences — and build. The frustration of getting behind erodes the lesson. Pace is everything.
Assessment
Note accuracy of transcription, self-correction, and error patterns.
