Building activities support toddlers' developing motor skills while introducing basic architectural concepts through play.
- Framework: IPC
- Unit: Fairytales
- Learning area: Physical Development
- Level: Infant & Toddler
Objectives
- Develops fine motor skills through stacking blocks
- Introduces concepts of height and balance
- Encourages spatial awareness and problem-solving
Materials
- Soft foam blocks in various sizes
- Cardboard tubes (paper towel rolls)
- Pictures of castles
- Small flags or fabric scraps
Instructions
Show children pictures of castles and point out the towers and walls. Provide soft blocks and encourage children to stack them to build their own castles. Help younger infants by placing blocks within reach and celebrating each successful stack. For older toddlers, add cardboard tube towers and small flags to decorate their creations.
Educator tip
Keep extra blocks nearby to rebuild quickly when towers fall—this is part of the learning process and shouldn't be discouraged.
Assessment
Observe children's ability to grasp and stack blocks, their persistence when structures fall, and their verbal or gestural responses to their creations.
