Instructions
Begin with familiar animals and where they live. 'Where does a fish live? In water! Fish live in ponds, rivers, and the sea. What do they need the water for?' Discuss basic needs.
Explore what all living things need. 'All animals need food, water, and somewhere safe to live. What do we need? What does a bird need?' Make connections across species.
Learn about different habitats and why animals live there. 'Polar bears live where it's cold and snowy. Their thick fur keeps them warm. Could a polar bear live in the desert? Why not?'
Create habitats in the setting. 'Let's make a bug hotel! What do we need to include for the bugs to live there?' Apply understanding of needs to practical projects.
Observe local wildlife over time. 'Let's keep a bird diary. What birds visit our garden? When do they come? What do they eat?' Develop observation and recording skills.
Discuss how humans can help animals. 'How can we help the birds in winter? Yes, we can put out food and water!' Connect learning to environmental action.
