Instructions
Request photos from each family before the child starts, explaining how you'll use them to help the baby feel connected to home. Include photos of parents, siblings, grandparents, pets, and the family home. Laminate all photos for durability and safety.
Create a cozy, quiet space for photo exploration. Hold the baby on your lap or position them comfortably so they can see photos clearly. Start with photos of their primary caregivers: 'Look, there's Mummy! Mummy loves you so much.'
Point to features in the photos, naming them: 'That's Daddy's smile. Where's your smile?' Touch the baby's face gently to connect the photo to their body. Repeat family names frequently to build recognition.
Watch for signs of recognition—the baby may smile, vocalize, or reach toward familiar faces. Respond with enthusiasm: 'You see Nana! Yes, that's Nana!' This validates their developing memory and emotional connections.
Incorporate family photos into daily routines, especially during transitions or when the baby seems unsettled. 'Mummy will come back after your nap. Here she is in the picture, see?'
Update photos regularly as families share new images. Include photos from family celebrations, holidays, and everyday moments to spark conversations about the baby's life outside the setting.
