Instructions
Choose historical figures that relate to children's interests or current topics. 'We love space, so let's learn about Mae Jemison—the first African American woman astronaut!' Make learning relevant.
Tell stories of historical figures in engaging, child-friendly ways. 'A long time ago, there was a nurse called Mary Seacole who was incredibly brave...' Focus on character and achievement.
Look at primary sources where appropriate. 'This is a real photo of Florence Nightingale. Look at her dress—it looks very different from what nurses wear now!' Discuss what we can learn from sources.
Place figures and events on a timeline. 'Mary Anning lived before your great-great-grandmother was born! That's a very long time ago.' Develop sense of chronological distance.
Act out historical events through role play. 'Let's pretend to be astronauts like Mae Jemison. What shall we do first?' Bring history to life through drama.
Connect to local history where possible. 'Someone famous lived in our town! Let's find out about them.' Make history feel close and relevant.
