Counting and Sorting the Harvest
To develop counting and sorting skills using real vegetables and fruit from the garden or greengrocer.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Seed to Table
- Learning area: Mathematics
- Level: EYFS 3-4
Objectives
- Sort objects by type, colour and size
- Count reliably within appropriate range
- Compare quantities using mathematical language
- Begin to record findings
Materials
- Basket of mixed vegetables and fruit (real or high-quality play food)
- Sorting hoops or trays
- Numeral cards 1-10
- Clipboard and mark-making materials
- Balance scales
Instructions
Model sorting by different criteria and counting aloud. Use mathematical vocabulary naturally and encourage children to explain their sorting decisions.
Educator tip
Extend the activity by weighing items on balance scales and introducing 'heavier' and 'lighter' vocabulary.
Assessment
Observe and note: reliable counting, use of mathematical language, ability to sort by given criteria. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations.
