- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Seed to Table
- Learning area: Understanding the World
- Level: EYFS 3-4
Objectives
- Understand that plants grow from seeds
- Identify what plants need to grow
- Make simple predictions
- Record observations through drawing
Materials
- Seed packets (cress, sunflower, runner bean)
- Small plant pots and compost
- Watering cans
- Magnifying glasses
- Observational drawing journals
- Labels and markers
Instructions
Guide children through the planting process, modelling careful handling of seeds and soil. Encourage predictions and use of scientific vocabulary.
Educator tip
Keep a class growth chart near the planting area so children can measure and compare growth independently during continuous provision.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to describe what plants need, use of scientific vocabulary, quality of observational drawings. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations.
