Instructions

TEACHING CORRECT GRIP: Show children how to hold scissors: thumb in top hole, index and middle finger in bottom hole. Demonstrate: 'Thumb on top, like thumbs up! Open and close like an alligator mouth.'

STARTING WITH SNIPPING: Begin with simple snipping—cutting single snips into the edge of paper. This builds the open-close motion. 'Snip, snip, snip around the edge!'

PROGRESSING TO STRIPS: Move to cutting strips of paper (about 2cm wide) in half. One snip cuts through. This gives satisfaction of cutting something while being achievable.

CUTTING ALONG LINES: Provide paper with straight lines. 'Can you cut along the road?' Thick, dark lines are easier to follow. Progress to wavy lines, then zigzags as skill develops.

TEACHING PAPER HANDLING: Show how to hold paper with the helper hand: 'This hand is the helper—it holds the paper. This hand is the cutter—it moves the scissors.'

CUTTING SHAPES: Once lines are mastered, move to shapes. Start with squares (straight lines), then progress to circles (continuous curving). 'Cut slowly around the circle—keep turning the paper!'

MAKING IT PURPOSEFUL: Cut for a reason: 'Cut out these pictures for our collage', 'Cut strips to make a paper chain', 'Cut along the lines to make a zigzag snake!' Purpose motivates practice.

SUPERVISING SAFELY: Always supervise scissors. Teach safety: 'Scissors are for cutting paper, not hair or clothes. We walk with scissors pointing down.' Establish these rules from the start.
