Coding a Rocket Launch
Learn the basics of coding by programming a rocket to launch and fly through space, developing computational thinking skills.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Our Universe
- Learning area: Understanding the World
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Understand basic sequencing in coding
- Create a simple programme to move a character
- Debug and improve their code
Materials
- Tablets with coding apps (ScratchJr, Kodable, or similar)
- Rocket sprite or character
- Coding sequence cards (unplugged option)
- Space background images
Instructions
Learn the basics of coding by programming a rocket to launch and fly through space, developing computational thinking skills.
Educator tip
Start with unplugged coding activities (arranging physical cards in sequence) before moving to devices if students are new to coding concepts.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Teacher observation of student's ability to sequence code blocks and debug their programs.
