Dental Hygiene Awareness

Infants build early awareness of body and routine through repetition and sensory input. 'Dental Hygiene Awareness' lays groundwork for future health habits.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Large, soft-bristle infant toothbrush

- Clean, damp washcloth

- Mirror at child-eye level

- Picture book featuring smiling faces or dental care

- Soft, washable puppet with a large mouth

Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate comfort with oral stimulation through gentle touch.

- Respond to the teacher's voice and facial expressions during the routine.

- Observe the teacher modelling the action of cleaning teeth or gums.

- Develop sensory awareness of the mouth area.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the infants in a comfortable, seated area on the floor.

2. Hold the puppet and use a cheerful, calm voice to introduce the concept of a clean mouth.

3. Show the infant the toothbrush and allow them to touch the soft bristles to explore the texture.

4. Position the infant in your lap so they are facing you and feel secure.

5. Use the mirror to show the infant their own reflection, pointing gently to their mouth and smiling.

6. Demonstrate the cleaning motion on the puppet to provide a visual model of the activity.

7. Gently wipe the infant's gums or first teeth with the clean, damp washcloth while maintaining eye contact.

8. Narrate the process using simple, repetitive language such as clean teeth or healthy mouth.

9. Offer the infant the soft toothbrush to hold or gum on under your close supervision.

10. Conclude the activity by praising the infant for their participation and returning to play.

Educator Tip

Infants often explore the world through their mouths, so keep the session brief to match their short attention spans. If an infant shows signs of discomfort or resistance, stop immediately and try again during a different part of the day when they are well-rested.

Assessment

- Observe if the infant remains calm while the teacher touches their mouth area.

- Note if the infant tracks the puppet or the toothbrush with their eyes.

- Record whether the infant attempts to grasp or explore the toothbrush independently.

Educator tip

Keep stimulation low; follow infant cues; sanitize props; avoid small parts.

Assessment

Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe gaze, sensory response, and regulation.
