Instructions
Hand each child a flag of a participating nation. Gather them at one end of the play space and explain that every World Cup begins with athletes parading into the stadium, smiling and waving to fans from every country. Demonstrate the parade walk: head up, flag held high, arms swinging. Start the music and lead the children in a slow march around the perimeter of the play space, stopping at four 'continent stations' marked with cones. At each station call out a movement: 'Africa - high knees!', 'Asia - tiptoe march!', 'Europe - big giant steps!', 'Americas - skip and wave!'. After two laps, gather the children in a circle. Each child takes a turn naming the country on their flag and showing their favourite parade move. Close by waving every flag together and shouting 'Welcome to the World Cup!'
Educator tip
Pair shyer children with confident partners during the parade. Use cardboard arches or streamers to create a real stadium-entrance feel.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observe sustained marching, ability to change movement on cue, and willingness to participate in the group parade.
