Mini World Cup Mini-Match
A short, supported match is the heart of a World Cup unit. Children apply every skill they have practised, learn to respect rules and feel the joy of representing a team.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Football Around the World
- Learning area: Physical Development
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Play a simplified soccer game with two small teams
- Follow basic rules and show good sportsmanship
- Use kicking, dribbling and passing skills together
Materials
- Two small goals (or cone goals)
- Pinnies or bibs in two colours
- One soft soccer ball
- Whistle
Instructions
Form two teams of four to six players. Each team chooses a country name. Mark a small pitch (around six by ten metres) with cones and a goal at each end. Review the three simple rules: 'Use your feet, no hands. Stop when I blow the whistle. Cheer for everyone, including the other team.' Start with a kick-off in the middle. Play short two-minute halves with a rest break for water and high-fives. The educator referees gently, narrating successes: 'Beautiful pass!', 'Look at Team Brazil moving the ball!' When a goal is scored, the whole group cheers and the scoring team does a celebratory dance. End the match with a handshake line: 'Good game! Good game!' regardless of score.
Educator tip
Keep the focus on participation, not score. Rotate goalkeepers every minute so everyone touches the ball.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Look for use of feet, awareness of teammates and respectful behaviour with opponents.
