Counting Goals - Match Maths
Soccer scores are a natural maths context. Children count, compare and record numbers in a meaningful, exciting situation where every goal matters.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Football Around the World
- Learning area: Numeracy
- Level: EYFS 3-4, Reception
Objectives
- Count up to 10 goals scored in a game
- Compare two numbers using 'more', 'fewer' and 'same'
- Record results on a simple scoreboard
Materials
- Magnetic or whiteboard scoreboard
- Number cards 0-10
- Small soccer ball, mini goal
- Two team flags
Instructions
Set up a mini goal and stand two teams of three behind their flag, each lining up to take a turn shooting from the same spot. Each team takes five shots. After every shot, the team that scored moves a number card up on the scoreboard. After each round say: 'Team Spain has 3, Team Korea has 2. Who has more? How many more?' Children answer with words or by counting their fingers. After both teams have completed their shots, count the final scores together. Celebrate both teams and write the final result on a wall scoreboard for the day. For older children, add the two scores together: '3 plus 2 makes how many goals in our whole game?'
Educator tip
Position the shot mark close enough that most kicks score. The maths matters more than the difficulty of the shot.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Listen for accurate counting and correct use of comparison vocabulary.
