Dribble Around the World
Dribbling is the foundational soccer skill. Setting it inside a 'travel around the world' game motivates repeated practise while building lower-body coordination, balance and spatial awareness.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Football Around the World
- Learning area: Physical Development
- Level: EYFS 3-4, Reception
Objectives
- Use the inside of the foot to push a ball in a chosen direction
- Control speed and direction while moving around obstacles
- Take turns and cheer for teammates
Materials
- Soft soccer balls or foam balls (one per child)
- Cones or markers labelled with country names
- Tape or chalk for a start line
Instructions
Set up six to eight cones in a wide zig-zag pattern across the play space. Tape a small flag or label to each cone (Brazil, Japan, Spain, USA, Ghana, Argentina, France, Korea). Show the children the inside-of-the-foot push: 'small, gentle taps - the ball stays close to your foot like a friend'. Children line up at the start. One at a time, they dribble from cone to cone, calling out the country as they reach it: 'Brazil!', 'Japan!'. When they reach the last cone they jog the ball back and pass to the next player. After everyone has had a turn, run a second round where children try to reach every country in under one minute. Finish with a group huddle naming every country they 'visited' today.
Educator tip
Demonstrate slowly and exaggerate the small taps. For younger groups, widen the spacing between cones so success comes easily.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observe whether children keep the ball within one body length, change direction with control, and wait their turn.
