Pass the Ball Around the Circle
Passing is the most cooperative skill in soccer. A circle pass builds gross motor accuracy and teaches children that World Cup teams succeed only when every player shares the ball.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Football Around the World
- Learning area: Physical Development
- Level: EYFS 3-4, Reception
Objectives
- Use a controlled inside-of-foot pass to a partner
- Receive a moving ball with the sole of the foot
- Cooperate with the whole group in a shared rhythm
Materials
- One soft soccer ball per group of six
- Cones to mark a circle
- Optional whistle
Instructions
Form circles of six children, each sitting around a cone-marked circle about four metres wide. Stand the children up and demonstrate a gentle inside-foot pass: 'point your toes to your friend, swing your foot like a pendulum, push the ball to them'. Begin the pass around the circle calling each child's name as they receive: 'Maya... Sam... Aria...'. After one full round, reverse direction. Add a twist for Level 2 and 3: call out a country name as you pass. 'France!' - pass. 'Brazil!' - pass. Speed up gradually. Close with a 'World Cup huddle' where every team puts a hand in and shouts 'Teamwork!'
Educator tip
Keep groups small (max six) so every child gets many turns. Lightly deflated balls are easier to control.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observe accuracy of the pass, ability to stop the ball, and use of teammate's name.
