Goal! Target Kicking Game
Aiming at a target sharpens leg coordination and concentration. Wrapping it in a 'free-kick at the World Cup' frame makes repetition irresistible and ties practise to authentic match moments.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Football Around the World
- Learning area: Physical Development
- Level: EYFS 3-4, Reception
Objectives
- Aim a kick at a target with accuracy
- Adjust strength of kick for distance
- Celebrate effort whether or not the ball scores
Materials
- Three small targets (cones, hoops, or buckets)
- Soft balls
- Tape to mark a kicking line
- Scorecard
Instructions
Tape a kicking line about three metres from three targets of different sizes - a large hoop (easy), a medium cone (medium), a small bucket (hard). Each child gets three kicks. Before kicking they call out 'France goes for goal!' (or their team name). They choose which target to aim for. Track hits on a simple chart. After each kick the group calls 'GOAL!' or 'Great try!'. Once every child has had a turn, run a second round where children try a harder target. End with a 'Best Try' celebration: each child names something they improved between their first and last kick.
Educator tip
Help children adjust their stance: non-kicking foot beside the ball, eyes on the target, follow through with the leg. A short demo each round resets technique.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observe stance, aim, and willingness to attempt harder targets.
