Pass the Trophy - Cooperative Relay
The World Cup trophy travels through many hands before it is lifted. A pass-the-trophy relay channels all that excitement into a fast, joyful gross motor task that depends on every teammate.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Football Around the World
- Learning area: Physical Development
- Level: EYFS 3-4, Reception
Objectives
- Run, balance and pass an object as part of a relay team
- Take turns and complete a shared challenge
- Celebrate the team rather than the individual
Materials
- A toy trophy (or decorated bottle)
- Cones to mark relay lanes
- Stopwatch (optional)
Instructions
Form teams of four to six children, each lined up behind a cone. Place a second cone about ten metres ahead. Show the trophy: 'This is our World Cup. Every player must carry it safely to the far cone and back, then pass it to the next teammate.' Demonstrate a careful jog with two hands on the trophy. Start the relay with a whistle. As each child runs, the team cheers their name. When the last child returns, the whole team lifts the trophy together over their heads and shouts their country's name. Run a second round with a twist: this time players must walk on tiptoes, then a third round zig-zagging through cones. Close with every team holding the trophy together for a celebration photo.
Educator tip
There are no losers in this relay. Celebrate the team that cheered loudest, the team that passed most carefully, and the team that smiled biggest.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observe safe carrying, waiting for turn, and team-focused celebration.
