Foods of the World Cup Snack Tasting
Football fans around the world share food in the stands. A small tasting introduces sensory vocabulary, geographic awareness and respect for cultural foods - all from real World Cup host nations.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Football Around the World
- Learning area: Sciences
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Taste small samples of foods from World Cup nations
- Describe foods using sensory words
- Connect food to country and culture
Materials
- Small samples of foods from 3-4 nations (e.g. Brazil - pao de queijo bites, Japan - rice crackers, Spain - tortilla slices, Mexico - corn tortilla strips)
- Plates, napkins
- Tasting chart with pictures
- Allergy check completed in advance
Instructions
Confirm all allergies and parent permissions in advance. Arrange a tasting table with four small plates, each labelled with a country flag. Gather children and explain: 'Today we will taste foods that fans eat at World Cup games in different countries.' Children wash hands, then visit each station with an adult to take a small sample. After each taste they mark on their chart whether they liked it ('yes', 'maybe', 'not yet'). After all four tastes, gather in a circle. Each child shares one country and one word to describe the food: 'soft', 'crunchy', 'salty', 'warm'. Locate each country on the world map from Activity 7.
Educator tip
Use 'not yet' rather than 'no' so children stay open to new tastes over time. Keep portions tiny.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe willingness to taste, use of sensory vocabulary, and country recognition.
