Closing Ceremony - Trophy Lift and Reflection

The World Cup ends with a closing ceremony where teams celebrate the journey, not just the winners. A reflective ceremony gives every child a public moment of pride and ties the unit's learning into a memory.

Instructions

Decorate the room with flags. Play upbeat instrumental music. Gather children in a circle holding their country flag. Show photos from the parade, the mini-match, the trophy relay. After each photo, name a child's contribution: 'Look at Maya passing the ball!', 'There is Aria cheering for everyone.' Each child takes a turn lifting the trophy and finishing the sentence: 'My favourite moment of the World Cup unit was...'. The whole class applauds and shouts the country's name. Present each child with a small ribbon or medal. Close with the parade anthem from Activity 1 and a final group cheer: 'Friends from every country - the world plays together!'

Educator tip

Invite parents or another class to attend the closing ceremony as the audience. Children rise to the occasion.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observe each child's ability to recall a favourite moment and participate respectfully in the ceremony.
