Instructions
Create rich, inviting role play environments that reflect children's interests and experiences. 'We've set up a café because you love making us cups of tea!' Involve children in setting up.
Observe play before joining. Watch the narratives developing and the roles children adopt. This tells you about their understanding and interests.
Join play sensitively when invited or when play needs extending. Adopt a role: 'Hello, is this the café? May I have a cup of tea, please?' Follow the child's lead.
Extend vocabulary through role play. 'Oh dear, I've burned my arm. I need to go to hospital! Can you help me, nurse?' Use context to introduce new words.
Avoid directing or taking over. If you have ideas, offer them as suggestions: 'I wonder if the baby needs feeding?' rather than 'Feed the baby now.' Let children decide.
Provide resources that allow all children to see themselves in play. Include diverse dolls, varied family structures, and disability representation. 'Here's a doll who uses a wheelchair, just like your friend Jamil!'
