Instructions
Create opportunities for light exploration in everyday moments. Notice sunlight making patterns on the floor: 'Look at the light on the carpet! It's moving!' Draw babies' attention to natural light phenomena.
Introduce torches safely, shining them on walls and ceilings, not in eyes. 'Watch the light—where is it going? There! On the ceiling!' Let babies track the moving light.
Give older babies torches to explore themselves. Show them how to turn on and off: 'Press here—light! Press again—dark!' Celebrate their cause-and-effect discoveries.
Use reflective materials to catch and redirect light. 'Look, the mirror is sending the light over there!' Let babies explore how reflections work.
Create shadow play opportunities. 'Here's your shadow! Wave your hand—the shadow waves too!' Help babies notice the connection between movement and shadow.
Set up a cozy den with fairy lights or a light projector for calming visual experiences. 'Let's watch the lights dancing on the ceiling.' This can be especially soothing at rest times.
