- Collections of identical objects (chains, wooden rings, large buttons)
- Containers of various sizes
- Natural materials in multiples
- Fabric bags and tins for collecting
Instructions
Set up heuristic play sessions in a calm, focused environment. Remove other toys and distractions. Lay out collections of objects in containers on the floor.
Step back and observe. Unlike treasure baskets, heuristic play is about combining, filling, and transferring objects. Watch how toddlers discover that chains fit inside tins, or wooden rings stack.
Resist the urge to show toddlers what to do. They will discover for themselves that objects can be banged together, posted through holes, or tipped out of containers. This is powerful learning.
Observe patterns in play. 'He spent 20 minutes filling and emptying the tin. He's working on a schema!' Document observations to understand each child's interests.
Occasionally narrate when the child looks to share their discovery. 'You put all the chains in the bag! It's heavy now!' Use mathematical and descriptive vocabulary naturally.
Tidy up together, making it part of the session. 'Let's put the wooden rings back in their tin. One, two, three...' This extends learning and establishes routines.
