Animal cards or figurines
Sorting mats

Instructions

1. Show cards one by one.

2. Ask, 'Would you see this animal at the circus?'

3. Sort and discuss why.

Allow debate—some animals might go in both categories!

Assessment

Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Evaluate reasoning and sorting accuracy.
