Instructions

Materials

- A copy of The Little Red Hen storybook

- Wheat stalks or grains for sensory observation

- Large chart paper and markers

- Drawing paper and coloured pencils

- Printed sequencing cards depicting the story events

Learning Objectives

- Identify the moral of the story regarding hard work and cooperation.

- Sequence the main events of the narrative in chronological order.

- Express personal opinions about character choices through verbal discussion.

- Illustrate a scene that represents the lesson learned from the text.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and show them the wheat stalks to build interest in the farm setting.

2. Read the story aloud with clear expression, pausing to ask children how the hen feels when her friends refuse to help.

3. Facilitate a group discussion about why the other animals did not want to work and the consequences of their choices.

4. Ask the children to identify the main lesson, or moral, of the story and record their responses on the chart paper.

5. Distribute the sequencing cards and ask students to arrange them in the correct order on their tables.

6. Circulate through the room to support students as they explain the order of the events to their peers.

7. Instruct students to draw a picture of themselves helping someone else, linking the story to their own lives.

8. Invite students to share their drawings and explain how their actions show kindness or hard work.

Educator Tip

If students struggle to identify the moral, use role-play to act out the scene where the hen asks for help. This kinesthetic approach helps children understand the emotional weight of the hen's situation and the importance of teamwork.

Assessment

- Observe if the student correctly sequences the four main story events.

- Note the student's ability to articulate the moral of the story during group discussion.

- Evaluate the student's illustration for clear connections to the theme of helping others.

Educator tip

Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
