Jack & the Beanstalk Phonics (Jj/Gg)

Supports agricultural awareness, STEM integration, literacy, and social-emotional development at the IPC Level 1 stage.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

Materials

- Large green sugar paper beanstalk cutout

- Laminated cards featuring images of items starting with J (jam, jet, jellybean) and G (goat, goose, garden)

- A small toy giant or a puppet

- Hook and loop fasteners or adhesive putty

- A basket for sorting

- Letter J and G cutouts in sandpaper or felt

Learning Objectives

- Identify the visual representation of the letters J and G.

- Distinguish between the initial sounds of words starting with J and G.

- Demonstrate fine motor control by placing cards onto the beanstalk.

- Participate in a group discussion about farm-related vocabulary.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather students in a circle and introduce the puppet giant who is hungry for specific letter sounds.

2. Display the large green beanstalk cutout on the wall or a magnetic board.

3. Show the sandpaper letter J and have students trace the shape with their fingers while saying the sound.

4. Repeat this process for the letter G.

5. Present the image cards one by one, asking the group to identify the item.

6. Ask the children if the word starts with the J sound or the G sound.

7. Invite a student to come forward and attach the card to the beanstalk based on the correct sound.

8. Encourage the class to repeat the word together after each successful placement.

9. Conclude by having the giant puppet "eat" the cards from the beanstalk while reviewing the names of the items.

Educator Tip

If students struggle to differentiate between the two sounds, focus on the physical mouth position required for each letter. Use a mirror to show how the G sound comes from the back of the throat while the J sound involves the teeth and tongue. This visual feedback helps children bridge the gap between abstract sounds and physical actions.

Assessment

- Observe if the child correctly sorts the image cards into the J or G category.

- Note the child's ability to trace the letter shapes with appropriate directional movement.

- Record whether the child can verbally produce the initial sound of the target words during the group activity.

Educator tip

Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
