- Unit: EYFS At the Farm
- Learning area: Understanding the World
- Level: EYFS 2-3
Objectives
- Developmentally appropriate objectives aligned to Toddler for Farm Venn Diagram Comparison.
Materials
- Level-appropriate farm-themed materials and manipulatives.
Instructions
Materials
- Two large hula hoops or two circles made of masking tape on the floor.
- A collection of plastic farm animal figures and plastic ocean animal figures.
- Two small baskets or bins.
- Laminated pictures of a barn and a blue ocean wave.
- A soft rug or floor mat for the activity area.
Learning Objectives
- Identify and name two common farm animals.
- Sort objects into two distinct categories based on visual cues.
- Demonstrate understanding of the concept of a group by placing items inside the designated circle.
- Develop vocabulary related to farm life through teacher modelling.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Place two hula hoops on the floor so they touch but do not overlap.
2. Place the barn picture inside one hoop and the ocean picture inside the other.
3. Gather the children in a semi-circle around the hoops to ensure everyone can see the materials.
4. Hold up a farm animal, such as a cow, and make the corresponding sound to engage the children.
5. Ask the children where the cow lives and guide them to place it inside the hoop with the barn picture.
6. Repeat this process with an ocean animal, such as a whale, and place it in the hoop with the ocean picture.
7. Hand one animal figure to each child and encourage them to walk to the hoops to place their animal in the correct category.
8. Provide verbal encouragement and positive reinforcement as each child completes their turn.
9. Keep the activity brief, as toddlers have short attention spans, and conclude once all animals are sorted.
Educator Tip
If a child places an animal in the wrong hoop, gently redirect them by asking a question about where the animal sleeps or what sound it makes. Avoid saying no, as this can discourage participation. Focus on the sensory experience of handling the figures and hearing the animal sounds.
Assessment
- Observe if the child correctly places the farm animal in the hoop with the barn picture.
- Note if the child can imitate the sound of the farm animal when prompted.
- Record whether the child follows simple directions during the sorting process.
Educator tip
Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.
Assessment
Observe and note: emerging independence, two-word combinations, imitation of actions, and early pretend play. Use Development Matters non-statutory guidance checkpoints. Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
