Instructions

Materials

- A large, soft green fabric beanstalk or a plush vine.

- Two clear sensory jars containing small items starting with J and G sounds.

- Laminated cards featuring large, high-contrast letters J and G.

- A soft puppet representing Jack.

- A basket of farm-themed textured fabrics.

Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate visual tracking of objects moved by the teacher.

- Respond to auditory stimuli by turning the head toward the sound.

- Engage in sensory exploration of different textures.

- Exhibit comfort and focus during one-on-one teacher interaction.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Create a calm, floor-based environment with a soft mat.

2. Place the green beanstalk vine in the centre of the space.

3. Introduce the Jack puppet to the infant using a gentle, animated voice.

4. Say the sound of the letter J clearly while pointing to the J card.

5. Shake a sensory jar containing a jellybean or toy jet to emphasize the J sound.

6. Allow the infant to touch the smooth surface of the jar to associate the sound with a tactile experience.

7. Transition to the letter G by showing the G card and making the hard G sound.

8. Present a small toy goat or a green leaf to represent the G sound.

9. Encourage the infant to reach for the items while repeating the letter sounds slowly.

10. Conclude the activity by cuddling the puppet and offering a soft fabric for sensory closure.

Educator Tip

Infants learn through repetition and the rhythm of your voice. Keep the session brief, lasting no more than five to seven minutes to match their attention span. If an infant loses interest, pivot to a simple sensory exploration of the fabrics rather than forcing the phonics focus.

Assessment

- Observe if the infant turns their head toward the teacher when the letter sounds are spoken.

- Record if the infant reaches for or tracks the movement of the J and G objects.

- Note the level of engagement during the sensory interaction with the beanstalk vine.

Educator tip

Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.

Assessment

Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
