Instructions

Materials

- Large green sugar paper beanstalk cutout

- Laminated paper leaves labelled with words starting with J or G

- Two baskets labelled with the letters J and G

- Plastic farm animal figurines or pictures

- Glue sticks or adhesive putty

- A copy of the story Jack and the Beanstalk

Learning Objectives

- Identify and distinguish between the letter sounds for J and G.

- Sort objects or words into correct phonetic categories.

- Develop fine motor skills through placing and attaching leaves.

- Retell key elements of the story using thematic vocabulary.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather students in a circle and read a short version of Jack and the Beanstalk, emphasizing words that begin with the target sounds.

2. Introduce the letter J as the sound in Jack and the letter G as the sound in Giant.

3. Model the J sound by saying jump and the G sound by saying grow, asking students to repeat each sound clearly.

4. Display the large green beanstalk on the wall or a magnetic board.

5. Distribute the laminated leaves to the students, ensuring each child has at least one leaf with a word or picture.

6. Ask each student to identify the beginning sound of the word on their leaf.

7. Invite students to come forward one by one to attach their leaf to the beanstalk.

8. Instruct the students to place leaves starting with J on the left side of the stalk and leaves starting with G on the right side.

9. Review the sorted leaves as a group, chanting the sounds together.

10. Conclude by having students jump like Jack if they hear a J word, or grow tall like a giant if they hear a G word.

Educator Tip

To support students who struggle with phonemic awareness, provide visual cues such as a picture of a jar next to the J basket and a goat next to the G basket. If students master the initial sounds quickly, challenge them to identify the ending sounds of the words on the leaves.

Assessment

- Observe if the student correctly sorts the leaf into the basket or area corresponding to its initial sound.

- Record whether the student can produce the J and G sounds in isolation when prompted.

- Note the student ability to follow multi-step directions during the sorting process.

Educator tip

Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
