Instructions

Materials

- Ten plastic farm animal figurines, such as cows, pigs, or sheep.

- Five small plastic baskets or shallow bowls.

- One large laminated card featuring a picture of a barn.

- A set of large foam number cards labelled 1 to 3.

- A soft rug or designated floor area for small group work.

Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate the ability to grasp and release objects into a container.

- Recognise the difference between one object and a group of objects.

- Follow simple verbal directions related to sorting or placing items.

- Engage in repetitive counting aloud with teacher support.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather three to four children on the floor and place the basket and animals in the centre.

2. Introduce the animals by name and make the corresponding animal sound for each one.

3. Place one animal into the basket while saying the number one clearly.

4. Invite each child to pick up one animal figurine and place it into the basket.

5. Count the animals aloud as they are placed into the basket to reinforce the sequence.

6. Once the basket contains three animals, dump them out gently to reset the activity.

7. Hold up the foam number card for one and ask a child to place a single animal next to it.

8. Encourage the children to touch the animals and explore their textures while counting.

9. Keep the session short, lasting no more than ten minutes to match the toddler attention span.

10. Conclude by singing a simple farm song while putting the animals back into their storage bin.

Educator Tip

Toddlers learn best through repetition and physical movement. If a child loses interest in counting, shift the focus to sensory exploration by having them sort animals by colour or size instead. This keeps the farm theme engaging without forcing a cognitive task that may be too advanced for their current stage.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can successfully place an object into a container upon request.

- Note if the child attempts to mimic the counting sequence or animal sounds.

- Record whether the child can distinguish between a single item and a small group.

Educator tip

Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.

Assessment

Observe and note: emerging independence, two-word combinations, imitation of actions, and early pretend play. Use Development Matters non-statutory guidance checkpoints. Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
