Instructions

Materials

- Twenty plastic farm animal figurines including cows, pigs, and sheep.

- Five laminated cards numbered 1 through 5 with corresponding dots.

- Small plastic baskets or bowls for sorting.

- A large piece of green felt to serve as the farm pasture.

- Dry erase markers for labelling baskets.

Learning Objectives

- Children will demonstrate one-to-one correspondence by touching each object as they count.

- Children will identify numerals 1 through 5 and match them to the correct quantity of objects.

- Children will practise classifying animals into groups based on physical characteristics.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and place the green felt in the centre to represent the farm pasture.

2. Introduce the animal figurines and ask the children to name each animal to build vocabulary.

3. Place the numbered cards in a row along the edge of the felt.

4. Demonstrate how to count by placing one cow on the card labelled with the number 1.

5. Invite a child to select two pigs and place them on the card labelled with the number 2, modelling the counting process aloud.

6. Continue this process until all numbered cards have the corresponding number of animals placed on them.

7. Distribute the baskets to small groups of children and provide them with a mix of animals.

8. Ask the children to sort their animals into the baskets based on the type of animal.

9. Encourage the children to count how many animals are in each of their baskets.

10. Circulate among the groups to ask open-ended questions about the totals and the characteristics of the animals.

Educator Tip

To differentiate for children who need a challenge, introduce a card labelled 6 or 7 and ask them to predict how many more animals are needed to complete the set. If a child struggles with counting, use a physical pointer to help them track each item as they count to prevent skipping or double counting.

Assessment

- Observe if the child correctly matches the number of animals to the numeral on the card.

- Note whether the child uses one-to-one correspondence or skips items while counting.

- Record if the child can accurately classify animals into groups without teacher assistance.

Educator tip

Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
