Farm Counting & Number Sets

Supports agricultural awareness, STEM integration, literacy, and social-emotional development at the IPC Level 3 stage.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Sets of plastic farm animal figurines including cows, pigs, and chickens.

- Laminated number cards labelled 1 through 10.

- Small plastic baskets or containers for sorting.

- Printed farm scene mats with designated counting zones.

- Dry erase markers for recording totals.

Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate one-to-one correspondence by touching each animal while counting aloud.

- Recognise and match numerals to the correct quantity of objects.

- Group items into sets to solve simple addition problems.

- Communicate mathematical thinking using farm-themed vocabulary.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Arrange children in small groups at tables and distribute one farm scene mat and a basket of mixed animals to each group.

2. Place the number cards face down in the centre of the table.

3. Ask one student to select a card and identify the numeral aloud.

4. Instruct the students to work together to place that specific number of animals onto their farm mat.

5. Have the students count the animals aloud in unison to verify the total matches the numeral on the card.

6. Introduce a challenge by asking students to add two more animals to their set and recount the new total.

7. Encourage students to record the addition equation on the side of their mat using a dry erase marker.

8. Rotate the animal baskets so students work with different quantities and types of farm figures.

9. Circulate the room to ask open-ended questions about how many more animals are needed to reach ten.

10. Conclude the activity by having students sort all animals back into their respective baskets by species.

Educator Tip

To differentiate for advanced learners, introduce a subtraction element by asking them to remove a specific number of animals from their set and calculate the remainder. If a student struggles with one-to-one correspondence, physically guide their hand to touch each animal as they say the number word to reinforce the connection between the object and the count.

Assessment

- Observe if the child correctly matches the quantity of animals to the numeral card without skipping items.

- Note the child's ability to adjust their count when animals are added or removed from the set.

- Record whether the child can explain their counting process using clear verbal language.

Educator tip

Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
