Farm Counting & Number Sets
Supports agricultural awareness, STEM integration, literacy, and social-emotional development at the IPC Level 1 stage.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS At the Farm
- Learning area: Mathematics
- Level: EYFS 3-4
Objectives
- Developmentally appropriate objectives aligned to IPC Level 1 for Farm Counting & Number Sets.
Materials
- Level-appropriate farm-themed materials and manipulatives.
Instructions
Materials
- Ten plastic farm animal figurines such as cows, pigs, or sheep.
- Five small baskets or plastic bowls labelled with numbers 1 through 5.
- A large tray or mat to define the workspace.
- Printed cards featuring pictures of farm animals for visual reference.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate one-to-one correspondence by touching each object while counting aloud.
- Recognise and identify numerals 1 through 5.
- Sort objects into sets based on a specific numerical value.
- Practise verbal counting sequences up to five.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a small group and place the tray in the centre.
2. Introduce the farm animals and encourage children to name each animal to build vocabulary.
3. Place the numbered baskets in a row and ask the children to identify the numbers on each.
4. Model the activity by taking one animal and placing it into the basket labelled 1 while counting aloud.
5. Invite a child to select two animals and place them into the basket labelled 2, counting slowly as they drop each one in.
6. Continue this process for the remaining baskets, ensuring each child has a turn to place at least one animal.
7. Encourage the group to count the animals in each basket together once all baskets are filled.
8. Ask open-ended questions such as which basket holds the most animals or which basket has the fewest.
9. Allow children to explore the materials independently after the guided demonstration.
10. Conclude the activity by having the children help return the animals to the storage bin.
Educator Tip
If a child struggles with one-to-one correspondence, physically guide their hand to touch each animal as they count. To extend the activity for more advanced learners, introduce a basket labelled with the number 6 and ask them to find enough animals to fill it.
Assessment
- Observe if the child touches each object exactly once while counting.
- Note the child's ability to match the quantity of animals to the numeral on the basket.
- Listen for the child's ability to recite the number sequence correctly during the activity.
Educator tip
Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
