World Mapping Activity
Level 3 promotes critical thinking and structured analysis. 'World Mapping Activity' strengthens global literacy and respectful cultural awareness.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Around the World
- Learning area: Geography
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Analyse similarities/differences among countries
- Justify thinking
- Extend with writing, mapping, or data graph
Instructions
Materials
- A large world map or globe for reference.
- Printed outline maps of the world for each student.
- Blue and green crayons or coloured pencils.
- Small star stickers or adhesive dots.
- Glue sticks and pre-cut images of diverse landmarks or animals.
- A globe or map puzzle for small group exploration.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the difference between land and water on a map.
- Locate the continent where the school is situated.
- Demonstrate spatial awareness by placing stickers on specific map locations.
- Describe how maps represent the world in a smaller, simplified way.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the students in a circle and display the large world map. Ask them to point to where they see blue and where they see green.
2. Explain that blue represents water and green represents land. Invite students to share if they have ever travelled across water or land.
3. Distribute the outline maps and crayons. Instruct students to colour all water areas blue and all land areas green.
4. Demonstrate how to hold the crayon to fill in shapes without scribbling outside the lines.
5. Once the maps are coloured, show the students the star stickers. Explain that these represent places they have visited or places they want to visit.
6. Assist students in placing one star on their home continent and one star on a different continent of their choice.
7. Provide the pre-cut images of landmarks or animals and guide students to glue them near the corresponding continent on their map.
8. Encourage students to present their maps to a partner, explaining where they placed their stars and why.
Educator Tip
To differentiate for students who need more support, provide maps with thicker outlines or pre-shaded water areas. For students who need an extra challenge, ask them to label their home country or draw a simple compass rose in the corner of their map.
Assessment
- Observe if the student correctly identifies and colours land versus water.
- Note the student ability to locate their home continent on the map.
- Evaluate the student participation during the group discussion regarding map symbols.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Rubric: reasoning, accuracy, clarity, independence.
