Life Cycle of the Butterfly
Few things enchant children more than watching a caterpillar become a butterfly. The transformation is lived, not told. A caterpillar that doesn't form a chrysalis shows something wrong — the control is biological reality.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Cultural Studies
- Learning area: Zoology
- Level: Ages 6-7
Objectives
- Identify and order the four stages of butterfly life: egg, caterpillar (larva), chrysalis (pupa), adult
- Raise butterflies in the classroom
- Compare to other insect life cycles (complete and incomplete metamorphosis)
- Release butterflies back to nature
Materials
- Life cycle diagram cards
- Live butterfly rearing kit (painted lady or monarch)
- Host plants for feeding
- Journal for observations
Instructions
1. Set up the rearing container. 2. Add caterpillars with host plants. 3. Observe daily: note eating, size, color. 4. Caterpillars molt several times. 5. Each forms a chrysalis — describe its color and shape. 6. Wait 10-14 days. 7. Adult emerges, wings expand. 8. Observe wing patterns, body parts. 9. Release outside where host plants grow.
Educator tip
The release is joyful and communal. Let each child hold a butterfly on their finger before it flies. Photograph everything.
Assessment
Note observation depth in journal, sequencing of stages, and understanding of metamorphosis.
