Magnetism — Poles, Attraction, Repulsion

Magnetism is invisible yet real. The child feels the pull between iron and magnet, the push between like poles. Iron filings make the field visible — a dramatic confirmation. A non-magnetic material (copper, plastic) is the control.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Test many materials with a magnet. 2. Sort: magnetic, not magnetic. 3. Hold two bar magnets near each other: opposite poles attract, like poles repel. 4. Sprinkle iron filings on paper over a magnet. 5. Observe the field pattern — lines from N to S. 6. Try with two magnets side by side. 7. Use the compass: Earth itself is a giant magnet. 8. Draw the observed field patterns. 9. Discuss applications: motors, speakers, compasses.

Educator tip

Iron filings are magical. Safety: keep in sealed containers, avoid skin contact. The field pattern is worth the care.

Assessment

Note classification accuracy, pole behavior, and field pattern observation.
